Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has apologized to fans and the BCCI after the board decided not to rush him back into the team for the upcoming Australia tour, as he’s still not fully match-fit. Shami recently had surgery and completed his rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). But his return has been delayed due to knee swelling, even though he says he is no longer in pain.
Shami, 34, shared a video of his training on Instagram, expressing his commitment to getting fit and back to playing. “Working hard on my bowling fitness day by day. Will keep at it until I’m ready to play domestic red-ball cricket. Sorry to the fans and BCCI, but I’ll be back very soon,” Shami wrote.
The experienced bowler’s comeback has been a big topic leading up to India’s Australia tour for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Shami is likely to play in Bengal’s Ranji Trophy match against Karnataka in early November, though he wasn’t chosen for the Test series in Australia. His message came just after India lost a home Test series to New Zealand, their first in 12 years.
In Shami’s absence, India’s pace lineup for the tour will include Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Siraj, and young players like Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana. Reserve bowlers Mukesh Kumar, Navdeep Saini, and Khaleel Ahmed will also be traveling with the team.
Shami’s last match was in the 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia. He has been recovering from an ankle surgery he had earlier this year.
